Mindeaf: Life of NSF/NSman is worth … not much

How much insurance coverage do NSFs/NSmen receive?  According to Mindeaf, not much really (image below).

How could the life of a Singaporean son be worth so little?

Since safety is not an issue in the army and accidents/fatalities are rare, group insurance premiums shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg.

At a fraction of the $15,000 to $16,500 – mostly CPF dollars – NS Home Awards, coverage could easily increase to $1 million, not much in the most expensive country in the world.

Insurance coverage for NSFs and NSmen should increase and I hope Mindeaf is listening.

This $150K cover only implemented quite recently … around 2010(?) or late-2000s.

Before this, the payout for death during NS is only $10K.

To provide $1M insurance cover, wait long long maybe in 2040. Or PAPpy ministers will ask you whether you want 20% GST to provide money to buy additional insurance.

Frankly in this day & age, Singapore should abolish NS … have a purely regular professional armed forces. Increase the starting pay of low-ranking soldiers doing the sai kang, especially those in ground combat vocations. And sack 80% of those officers Maj & above as well as warrant officers — majority of them are redundant & jiak liao bees collecting billions in pay each year.

The linked article was in June 2016: “Free life and personal accident insurance coverage will be provided for all full-time national servicemen (NSFs) and operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen) from next month.”
Besides indoctrination, NS is needed by PAP for the promotion of hundreds of paper generals and colonels.
Even China and India are investing in drone technology which costs a fraction of $100 million a piece F35, excluding maintenance. Fortunately, Singapore has postponed plans to purchase 12 F35s.

The introduction of NS in my humble opinion was to tackle the problem of jobless youths back then

But over time, it was morphed into this dinosaur that does not have much purpose (ya right, defend SG for a couple of hours to that the elites can leave town)

The only other countries that put out so much military hardware for show during national day is China and North Korea I think
