Subject: Government cutting costs + businesses cutting corners = Increased danger on our roads

Dear PM Lee

I refer to my numerous feedback on the recklessness of heavy vehicle drivers to the LTA, TP and PMO over the past few years.

2 While undeniably some action has been taken, the relevant authorities don’t seem to have a handle on the situation.

3 Unsafe transportation of cargo has remained as blatant, if not worse. (Not forgetting our roads are still littered with construction debris from overladen heavy vehicles.)

4 The issue is caused by the import of driving ‘talents’ from third-world countries, drivers who have been conditioned for years to third-world safety. But they are not solely to blame because the green light must have been given by their companies in pursuit of higher profits.

5 The government is also partly to blame as the lack of enforcement action over the years has emboldened such reckless behavior. It appears the government has been cutting costs.

6 Businesses are aware that flouting road safety rules will result in only a slap on the wrist, as if the Traffic Police was non existent. While the government has been cutting costs, businesses have been cutting corners.

7. The image below, taken 2 days ago, speaks for itself.

6 I have already included numerous images in my previous feedback to Traffic Police AC Sam Tee and his team should have been aware of the issue. What is lacking is the ‘right’ approach and sending a strong message that such recklessness will not be tolerated.

7 An accident involving an overladen vehicle with improperly secured cargo could result in tens of thousands of hours in productivity losses and serious injuries or more likely fatalities. Victims could be our loved ones, including PM Lee’s.

8 So please do not cut costs and increase enforcement to prevent unnecessary accidents once and for all. Companies which employ reckless drivers or approve of such behavior must be taken to task. The relevant authorities can ill afford to continue sleeping on the job.

Thank you and have a nice day.

One Response to Government cutting costs + businesses cutting corners = Increased danger on our roads

  1. Confused says:

It is not easy to spot all these reckless drivers in every corners of Singapore even though we are small.

With more in vehicle cctvs installed on the road, maybe the traffic police should make upload of video footage easier for other road users to report those irresponsible drivers.
