All our problems are directly linked to PAP’s immigration/foreign talent policy ie Singaporeans losing jobs to foreigners, depression of wages, overcrowding, sky high housing prices, etc.
In 2007 when the population was only 4.5 million, the PAP had already announced plans “to accommodate a population of 6.5 million people” in the “next 40 to 50 years” (year 2047 to 2057). PAP ministers and top civil servants had tasted the fruits of their ‘success’ in ramping up the GDP and were all out to help themselves to more million dollar paychecks.
In 2013, a mere 6 years later, PAP’s PWP roadmap for Singapore’s population policies was nonsensically justified to increase the population by an additional 400,000 people to 6.9 million Instead of 2047 to 2057, PAP wants a 6.9 million population 17 to 27 years earlier.
PAP should not make a laughing stock of itself by calling this ‘long term’ planning. What it has been doing is tailor the question to fit the answer ie its economic growth model is determined by growing the population.
(Look around us and we can confirm that our reserves have already been invested in all the infrastructures, turning Singapore into the biggest construction site in the world. These ‘investments’ must yield decent returns for the PAP and it will continue with its only idea of making money through population growth.)
Common sense tells us if the PAP did not anticipate issues when the population was much lower, and with all the issues unresolved, it should not proceed with increasing the population by another 1 million foreigners by 2030. Unfortunately, PAP has the power to proceed and continue ignoring citizens.
At an IPS speech in 2008, LKY said “I think there’s an optimum size for the land that we have, to preserve the open spaces and the sense of comfort”. He had also said he “has not quite been sold on the idea of a 6.5 million population size in Singapore” and “projects for Singapore an optimum population size of five to 5.5 million for Singapore”.
We have to credit LKY for such wisdom but its pointless when our foolish government has already increased the population to more than 5.5 million in 2015, 15 years ahead and surpassing LKY’s upper limit.
PAP governments post LKY have been engaging in ‘suka-suka’ planning. In URA’s 1991 Concept Plan for a population of 4 million in 40 to 50 years time, we achieved this in 9 years, no thanks to Goh Chok Tong’s red carpet treatment for FTs. We are currently facing challenging issues because URA’s 2001 Concept Plan targeted population of 5.5 million was brought forward to 2015.
Planning by scholars or simply tikam tikam? Do we need to pay the highest political salary for such a government?
2007 – Population at 4.5 million, PAP planned 6.5 million population by 2047 to 2057
2008 – LKY said optimal population 5 to 5.5 million for Singapore
2013 – PM Lee’s government proposes population increase to 6.9 million in 2030
2015 – Population exceeded LKY’s optimal upper limit, creating insurmountable problems.
Many of our issues could have been anticipated if not for the lack of common sense from our scholars. PM Lee could have ignored common sense but should have respected and listened to his wise father on the population issue.
